What importance those education and academic qualifications go toward career mapping and a candidate’s career progression? What career advice or career guidance would you give to somebody that really hasn’t a clue as to what career they would like to persist? The students who are not sure and haven’t a clue can often be very worried about this but in actual fact they are often better off than the student who sees career as a particular occupation they will have when they graduate for the rest of their life. Career is a lifelong journey and a process of developing skills, continual learning and continually improving personal qualities that are transferable. It will be great and far better if the student can focus on the journey instead of focusing on specific destination. Education and Career Guidance go hand in hand. For almost entire of the careers nowadays academic qualifications are a pre-requisite. However students also need to be able to make choices and decisions, plan initiatives, be entrepreneurs and be creative thinkers. This is because the reality today is that the majorities of the students I see have not clear direction and will have not one but several careers. They will have to reinvent themselves many times and change roles and organizations. So the question is “Is it ever too late to get back into education”? It is never too late to get back into education as learning is a life-long process. People are most alive when they are learning, determined and engaged. Anyone now can return to education because there are so many opportunities for people now. There are also many more opportunities for students to remain in education after second-level. The National Framework of Qualifications provides a level for everyone and all qualifications in the NFQ are recognized at home and abroad. At secondary school level education, career guidance and career advice are very interlinked. You are guiding the student and helping equip them with the self knowledge and skills to progress further. With post-graduates current job opportunities and prospects play a much greater role.

Post Graduate Options: Why should a Graduate consider Post Graduate study? How can a career guidance confronting session help a graduate pick a post graduate course? There are so many reasons why a graduate should consider postgraduate study. It may give them the chance to expert in a particular area, may help them change a career direction or It can improve their employment prospects. For instance an arts degree can be a sufficient choice at undergraduate level as it keeps a enormous range of options open if a student isn’t quite sure what direction they would like to follow. Then Most of the Arts graduate feels difficulty in deciding which postgraduate course to choose and from where they can get professional advice which is certainly help. A professional assessment will look at their level of educational achievement to date, their personality type, aptitudes and interests as well as job experience to date. In Ireland there are over 1300 different subjects that can be studied at post-graduate level and when busy studying for a degree many students find they are not aware of the choices available to them. So this is the right time where educational guidance can be of huge benefit. Education has been and will always be the path of success for any individual, and as the American writer Ralph Ellison said once “Education is all a matter of building bridges”.

It takes more than one step, more than one brick to build a bridge, and also to build your career which starts with education. You can build your career from within the organization that you work at or between different organizations, but before that it is significant that you understand the importance of your own personal development and of career planning. Career development is an ongoing process that will help you achieve more every day in any activity you do.

Ginzberg, Ginsburg, Axelrad and Herma theory (1951) proposes that it is a development path that leads to career choice. “Recognizing that vocational choice is influenced by four facts: the reality factor, the influence of the educational process, the emotional factor and individual values”

If you are not sure what you want to do, take a step back and explore a little bit in your environment, your attitudes, the way you approach your problems and the different roles that you can take. This is the best way to start your career assessment and  prepare your career development plan in which you decide where you want to be, what you want to do and what you can do to achieve it.

There are many ways in which you can develop your career and better yet, it is never too late to start. The most valuable thing is to be ready to face up to the wonderful future ahead of you. So as a first step you can always look for a career consultant to help you understand what your needs, skills, strengths and weaknesses are as well as to help you shape the career plan that can adjust to your life style and that can lead to long term satisfaction.

Of course it is always important to know what you are good at, so no matter if it is just the beginning of your career or if you are already in the process of developing it, an career assessment test will help you look into those specific skills, likes, dislikes, abilities, among others that are important for you as a person to give the best of you in any work environment. This kind of assessment will also help you match your personality and interests with the areas and jobs that you could enjoy the most.

Always keep in mind that the world is in constant change and so there is a need for everyone to keep learning and keep growing in knowledge in order to compete and succeed in the job market.
