Monday mornings were such a boring day for Diana Grande (a fictional character). She faced the weekday with real regret. She sat at her kitchen table just wishing that it were still the weekend. She was not mentally prepared to go to the office for doing work because she feels stuck, with no way out.

Parents believe that applying to college today is dramatically different from when they went to school. Below are a few noted trends of this year:

Trend #1 An increased amount of college applications being submitted to colleges

Many universities experienced an increased amount of applications received as students applied to more schools. Students presume that they will have more choices to pick by casting a wider net on multiple options. Almost 85% of college applicants applied through an online process, which may be one of the reasons why students are applying to more schools. Less mail to be sent out, less paper forms to organize and quicker response time can contribute to this new trend. During the Fall of 2010 admission cycle, four-year colleges and universities received an average of 85% of their applications online, up from 80 % in Fall of 2009.

Trend #2 Schools Augment the Use of Waitlist

When applicants redeem an acceptance or rejection, they know where they stand. Due to an increase in schools wait listing status, too many applicants are in a state of nirvana hoping that they will be admitted to a school they have been wait listed at. This can be a deceiving hope since institutions are actually taking fewer students off of their wait lists than they did previously. Of the schools surveyed, 48% of institutions used a wait list in 2010 compared with just 39% in the prior year. Getting off a wait list was harder. Schools accepted 28% of applicants on wait lists compared with 34% a year earlier.

Trend #3 Southern Schools have taken on a new popularity

An increase in college applications is noted by almost all admission offices in the Southern region of the US.  Many of these schools are just being conceived by students around the country and this diversion continues to grow. More college students have been saying hello to sunshine and bye-bye to snow as they make their way down South for school. Students prefer strong academic programs that characterize many schools in the South and also the climate which may affect their mood and therefore performance.


Trend #4 Rise in International student applicants can easily be observed every year

It is also noted that for Asian students, studying in the U.S. is an investment for an enhanced lifestyle and increased amount of opportunities. A boost in the number of international students applying to U.S. institutions has made getting into college even more competitive. Most of the colleges presume that International students provide a financial boost by paying full fees to attend college in the United States. A survey, conducted by the Council of Graduate Schools showed a 9% increase in applications in 2012 from countries outside the United States. International students are recruited by many colleges now to provide more distinction and a global perspective to their schools. Colleges also conceive that International applicants who want to study in the U.S. are willing to pay the full price for their education.

There was a little girl back in the 90’s who wanted to be a saleswoman when she grew up. She decided that every summer she and her sister would make popsicles as a fun family activity. She sold popsicles to neighbors and friends and made some money while practicing her selling skills. That little girl is a very close friend of mine and now a successful sales manager working at a recognized retail store.

Summer time is here, school is out but how much do you stay engaged with your career goals? We do agree, summer is a time to enjoy the sun, the beach, the pool, friends, barbeques and much more but it is always good to keep your goals in mind.

Results from a Homeschool community question: “What do you find time to do in the summer?” (Posted in the HEAV Facebook page) yielded different activities including trips to the beach, gardening, summer camps, swimming at a local pool, and more. Many of the respondents continue to engage in activities which progressed the development of their skills that would be useful for educational and career opportunities. Activities such as trips to the library, read aloud books, visiting museums, among other things are good options to keep engaged with career goals while having fun.

We encourage you to become a leader in what you do and what you enjoy. The best time to do this is when you actually have a little bit more time, when is that? Summer time!

So, if you like fashion, try to write an article for a fashion magazine or design new clothes for your friends. If you are into arts, sign up for art camp or an art contest. If you want to be a veterinarian, why not visit zoos this summer and try to learn more about the animals?
